Panadero found the limousine waiting for him at the curb. He hopped in the back seat. Another man already sat inside. The man gave Panadero a disapproving glance.

“Something on your mind, Salvador?”

Salvador Costa was Panadero’s second-in-command. One of the few men Panadero trusted. They’d grown up on the streets together. Panadero was the leader; Sal Costa the detail man.

“These antics of yours, Tony—”

“Are my business.” He yelled for the driver to go. The driver put the car in gear and joined the flow of traffic. Panadero pressed a button and a plastic partition between the back and front rose, blocking them off from the driver. He didn’t want his people privy to his private conversation, especially a driver, who held such a low rank.

“What if one of your girlfriends ever stabs you to death?”

“They can try.” He smirked. He watched the passing scenery.

Costa said nothing more for a few moments. The tinted windows kept the bright light outside at bay. Then: “We have to talk about the latest.”

“Tell me the latest, Sal. I’m listening.”

“Sevilla’s organization is in disarray, as we predicted.”

“As I predicted.”

“The result wasn’t a stretch of the imagination in any way, Tony. Come on. We all knew a power struggle would result. We counted on it.”

“Who’s winning?”

“As of now, nobody. But the bodies are stacking up. Yasmina, Sevilla’s daughter, is rallying those loyal to her father. She will emerge victorious, but not for a while. There’s plenty of others who will try for the big chair.”

“Good. Keep them too busy to worry about us. We’ll slip into their US territory like a knife through butter.” He laughed. “Or should I say—”

“Don’t,” Costa said.

Panadero laughed again.

“Then there’s Ward,” Costa said.

“Is he still acting like a little girl? Jumping at shadows?” Panadero asked. “You should have heard my last conversation with him, Sal. He acts as if the boogey man is coming for him.”

“He’s made no more remarks to me about the Raven fellow,” Costa said. “He’s making his appointments. Things are progressing. Slowly.”

“Too slow.”

“We can’t rush, Tony.”

“I know we can’t rush, Sal. But I wish we could move faster.”

“And what about Raven? Can we really not consider him a threat?”

“Any sign of a body?”

“No body, and no live sightings, either.”

“Then he’s dead,” Panadero stated.

“I’m not so sure.”

“You agree with Ward?”

“I agree we don’t have the concrete solution we need.”

“There was a risk in hiring the mercenaries,” Panadero said. “We’re facing the risk—one or more surviving. But what can one man do against us?”

“Raven is more than one man.”

Panadero laughed again. “He’s a tool. A sharp tool. I wanted him for a reason. He was the best man to lead the team, somebody who lent legitimacy to the effort. And he did his job to perfection.”

“He’ll destroy everything you’ve worked for.”

“What are you saying?” Panadero twisted in the seat to scowl at his number two. “We are more powerful than one man might ever achieve. I don’t care what kind of army he raises.”

“We have to remain vigilant.”

“All right. We will remain vigilant.
